Yes, I am aware the Makefile builds an Ant script on the fly and executes it.
Yes, this is a bit OTT.  Very very happy if someone feels able to
redo the Build beast in pure Ant. Or some other technology.

acceptable response: “we could do all this in scripting language X. I’ll give it a try and see if I can produce the same results”

less acceptable response: “make is evil, i don’t understand it, why don’t you you rewrite it in language X, I hear thats good though
	I haven’t actually tried it myself”

out-field response: “if we abandoned XML and XSLT, and re-expressed the TEI constraints in language Y, it would take over the world"
