Thanks to Conal and Dan for very helpful comments, now acted upon.

With some trepidation, I remind you that another major change at the 
forthcoming release is provision of support for <pc> (the Alexei 
Lavrentiev memorial element) so you may also want to check out 
http://tei.oucs.ox.ac.uk/P5/Guidelines-web/en/html/AI.html#AIPC ... it 
could certainly do with a few more juicy examples though they'll have to 
arrive charpish  to get into the next release
