I would suggest to you that among the few historical studies of
the sixties, SDS is overrepresented. Two of the most cited works on the
sixties revolve around the activities of that group: Todd Gitlin's THE
SIXTIES and Wini Breines' COMMUNITY AND ORGANIZATION IN THE NEW LEFT,
1962-1968. Some of the longer lasting transformations from the Sixties,
such as in the areas of sexual behavior and drug use, have been
neglected.
The Weathermen, meanwhile, are popular topics for disillusioned
critics, such as Collier and Horowitz in DESTRUCTIVE GENERATION, who can
focus on the extreme behavior of such groups to point to how Sixties
ferment went wrong.
