Vernor Vinge, scholar and science-fiction writer, predicts that one of
the most likely scenarios for the next 20 years is the creation of
computers that surpass humans in intelligence. Mr. Vinge, writer and
lecturer on the future of computing, is an associate professor of
mathematics and computer science at San Diego State University. He is
credited by some as being one of the first to imagine a shared virtual
space created by computer networks. In an interview with the Chronicle
of Higher Education, Mr. Vinge describes the ongoing development of
computers that act as an extension of the human mind. "It is a very
unsettling thing, but ... it's not clear that it is dystopic."
