I have just simplified the build still more by making it use local copies of jing and trang jar files. I believe that
there are now no dependencies on directory paths, except to the Stylesheets, which are covered by the “XSL”
Makefile variable, as in:

   make XSL=/Users/rahtz/TEI/Stylesheets

which is what I do

You should have working ant, perl, java and xmllint in order to have the basic “make” working, which
is what most people want. building the PDF documentation is a bit more challenging.
