Gabby's right. I was focusing on placement of <biblScope> in relation to 
<imprint>.  So Lou's citation (from the Guidelines) would in fact be:

     <title>Historical Editions in the States</title>
     <biblScope type="pp">377–380</biblScope>
   </analytic>
   <monogr>
