the message
Description: An <lg> must contain at least one child <l>, <lg> or <gap>. (count(descendant::tei:lg|descendant::tei:l|descendant::tei:gap) > 0) [assert]
is actually rather unpleasant. shall we make a note to ourselves to remove the < and >? excessively nerdy.
