A doltish side-question: why does this discussion assume that <i>
is equivalent to <hi rend="italic"> rather than to <seg rend="italic">?
I should have thought that using <hi> was at least a little abusive,
if all you want to do is record the fact that something is in
italics and avoid taking responsibility for saying why.
