If we put out a release now with the unadorned ptr in examples, I think we do the community a disservice, and slip back towards old style "TEI write once read never non-interoperable unprocessabe markup" 

But I will abide by the majority decision of course.

My answer to martins question is
 4. Rewrite the exx not to use ptr at all
