Dear Fellow Council Members,
In May 2004, the Council gathered in the building of the Royal Academy
of Dutch Language and Literature and enjoyed the Academy's amicability
and hospitability. I believe we held a successful meeting in the
beautiful historical setting of the Academy building.
The Flemish Minister of culture now has launched the idea to sell the
building of the Royal Academy and relocate the Academy out of its
building. The minister is in urgent need of some money and thinks this
could be the solution.
We protest fiercely against the planned sale of the building and
relocation of the Academy which would undoubtedly influence the research
currently undertaken at the Academy, i.e. inside the Centre for
Scholarly Editing and Document Studies (CTB). The Permanent Secretary of
the Academy would like to ask for your support which you can articulate
in three ways:
1. You can back up the stance of the Royal Academy
<http://www.kantl.be/main.php?page=verkoopeng&sub=stance>, by sending
your details (title, name, function, affiliation and address) to
reactieverkoop at kantl.be. Or print out the viewpoint, add your title,
name, function, affiliation and address, sign it and send it to the
Royal Academy at KANTL, Koningstraat 18, b-9000 Gent, Belgium. In either
way, your name will be added to the list of people who protest against
the plans of the minister of culture at:
2. You can send or mail a letter of protest to the current Minister
of Culture in which you e.g. emphasize the cultural and scholarly role
of the Royal Academy, its library, archive and its research centre
(Centre for Scholarly Editing and Document Studies). You can contact the
Minister of Culture at:
Bert Anciaux
Flemish Minister of Culture, Youth, Sports and Brussels
Chrysalisgebouw - Wetstraat 34-36
b-1040 BRUSSEL
Belgium
kabinet.anciaux at vlaanderen.be
Please make sure you send a copy of your letter to
reactieverkoop at kantl.be or to:
Prof. dr. Georges De Schutter
Permanent Secretary
Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature
Koningstraat 18
b-9000 Gent
Belgium
3. You can send a letter of support to the Permanent Secretary of
the Royal Academy wherein you back up the Academy's protest against the
plans for sale of the building and relocation of the Academy, and in
which you emphasize the importance of the Royal Academy's cultural and
scholarly work in an international context. Please send your letters of
support/protest, if possible on headed (institutional) notepaper, to:
Prof. dr. Georges De Schutter
Permanent Secretary
Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature
Koningstraat 18
b-9000 Gent
Belgium
Of course you could also mail your letter, addressed to the
Permanent Secretary, to reactieverkoop at kantl.be, although letters on
paper are prefered for this matter.
We would be much obliged if you could consider this request.
Sincerely yours,
Edward Vanhoutte
on behalf of the
Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature
