Back in the 70's i played a benefit for the Black Panthers at a NYC
university (the name escapes me at the moment). There had just been a
huge riot demonstration and shut down and my appearance was after. i
was solo at the time. i did a new song i had written for Henry
Miller's story QUIET DAYS IN CLICHY being made into a movie by a
Danish company. i was hired to do music for the film. the song
follows the story pretty much as it happens and one verse is "Little
collette she has no sense serving the breakfast without her pants
spoiling the coffee and burning the eggs all of her brains are between
her legs". As i was singing people were yelling "off the pig" so
loudly that i started to look around for the cops THEN i realized they
were yelling at me! that i was the "pig". since then i have become
enlightened to sexism and learned that pigs are very intelligent and
friendly animals and my song has become a european "classic" better
known in some places than my vietnam song. it is considered art by
some. my mother always considered it pornography and embarrassing.
as bob dylan said "you can fool some of the people some of the time
and part of the the people all of the time but .......oh, whatever you
get what i mean. cheers, country joe mcdonald
