If we're going to get into American films on the experience of
Vietnamese immigrants (which I don't think was the original intent),
don't forget Louis Malle's Alamo Bay (1985), about the discrimination
against Vietnamese in Texas by local fishermen who were afraid of the
competition. (The title of the Stone movie was just Heaven & Earth.)

On BOAT PEOPLE by Ann Hui, most Hong Kong critics have stated that her
view of Viet Nam is culturally biased. She chooses mainland Chinese actors
to play bad Vietnamese characters. Stephen Teo's HONG KONG CINEMA: THE EXTRA
DIMENSION (London: BFI, 1997) is worth consulting here. It is a"1997 film."
