Well done, David, and you've told me a few things I didn't know.
As Paul Gaston said earlier today, I too find it odd that this list, of
all lists, has so little to say about the Civil Rights Movement or '60s
black activism (except for an occasional question about Huey Newton) as a
whole. The omission is reminiscent of the way slavery was treated in the
history books of my (our, list?) youth and acts to perpetuate the "unsung
hero" syndrome. Consequently, often these days I find myself asking the
concluding question of your post, though I would extend it to everything
from the war protests to the revival of feminism and to the other
movements that were spawned in the wake of the storm (i.e., mid '70s).
