I've found a most helpful design tips page:
Try surfing off the above url w/o the "tips" for an example. One hint
that I just tried: if you have big chunks of text, drop it into a table
that narrows it down to about 10-15 words wide (see that site for many
examples). It makes stuff about a thousand times easier to read- you can
get the same effect by narrowing your browser window when you come across
a big block of text and it seems to make a big difference.
