A good antidote to Ranke-an dicta comes in two parts: first Novick, That
Noble Dream; then Jenkins, Why History? There is always an allegation from
historians that everyone else is triumphalist, and in my experience working
with medical history the phenomenon Willard outlines exists, but it usually
turns out to be a matter of degree, as we see in the arguments about
American exceptionalism among historians.
