Eric Johnstone's comment on his book prompts me to point out that
self-reviews are not new. They were reasonably common in late 19th century
German academia. In the Goettinger Gelehrten Anzeiger of the 1880s and
1890s there were a considerable number of self-reviews. And this
publication was the official publication of the Academy of Sciences in
Goettingen.
It seems to me that there are often times when an adequate review by
another academic is difficult to get in a timely fashion. In these cases,
a precis by the author serves the academic community well.
