"Rogues, Vagabonds, and Sturdy Beggars: Constructing the
Criminal in Early Modern England"
SPECIAL SESSION
MLA CONVENTION 1996
This panel seeks papers that explore the intersection of crime and
culture and its representation in literary texts in areas such as the
social context of infamous crimes, the emerging "science" of
criminology, the intersection of crime and geography, theories of
words and pictures in relation to crime (i.e., woodcuts of crime
scenes, riots, rebellions), pamphleteers and their impact on the
emerging genre of "crime reporting," criminal biography, crime and
economy, crime and consumerism.
