Subject: Bilingual Canadian Dictionary Project

The Bilingual Canadian Dictionary Project
This interuniversity, pan-Canadian project was launched in early 1988 with
the goals of producing a truly Canadian English-French, French-English
dictionary and developing an electronic database of English- and French-
Canadian texts for comparative work in the fields of translation and lexical
research.
Led by Professor Roda P. Roberts at the University of Ottawa's School of
Translation and Interpretation, the project brings together a team of seven
researchers specializing in various subfields of linguistics at the
University of Ottawa, the University of Montreal and Laval University.
The research team also includes a number of graduate students and researchers
who are being trained in bilingual lexicography.
In January 1994, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of
Canada awarded a major grant to the Project to be paid over five years.
During this period, the researchers plan to produce an extensive English-
French, French-English Canadian electronic dictionary database as well as a
number of scholarly articles on various aspects of the research work. The
dictionary itself is slated for completion in 2003.
