Subject: characters in lynx

A technical question. What determines the ability of lynx to display
accented characters, and how must (or should) these be represented so that
the least has to be done by the largest number of users in order to see
them? I am involved in bringing onto the Web a bilingual journal in English
and French. I would prefer to design it so that readers who have only lynx
can read the same French text as those with NetScape/Mosaic. I can safely
assume that these readers will have some technical ability, but I would
prefer not to require of them that they adjust their set, so to speak, in
order to get clear reception. Investigation so far indicates that the
terminal emulation software has at least something to do with the problem.

Thanks for any help.
