Teaching and Learning in Humanities Higher Education
a one day conference on Saturday, 14 October 1995
at The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK

Teaching and Learning in Humanities Higher Education is a one-day conferenc=
e
planned to bring together researchers and educators in the field of humanit=
ies
higher education.

The day will start with a keynote address on funding issues. This will be
followed by an introduction to the Humanities Disciplines Network - a new g=
roup
funded by the Employment Department to bring together those interested in
humanities teaching and learning in higher education.

A range of stimulating and sometimes controversial issues will be raised du=
ring
the day, including plans to publish a journal dedicated to humanities highe=
r
education research. There will be plenty of opportunity to exchange views, =
in
what is hoped will be a fully interactive programme.

Running in conjunction with the conference will be a Classical Studies stra=
nd.

11.15 - Introduction to the Humanities Disciplines Network,

11.45 - Graduate entrants to the publishing industry:
What do employers want and how satisfied are they
with what they get?

12.15 - Using computers to help in the Teaching & Learning of Music
12.15 - Teaching, Learning and Improving the Quality of Argument

12.45 - Lunch - World Wide Web and poster display

2.00 - Four short presentations: Teaching & Learning styles,
assignment based learning, core skills and preparing for HE

All papers prepared in connection with the conference will be collated and =
sent
to participants after the event, along with a report of the proceedings.

An attendance fee of =A325 will be charged for those in employment. This wi=
ll
enable us to provide refreshments during the day (coffee, lunch and tea), t=
o
reimburse our keynote speaker, and to cover the costs of materials producti=
on.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Director of Academic Computing
West Virginia University

Nominations and applications are invited for a newly created position of
Director of Academic Computing.

COMPUTING ADMINISTRATION AND ENVIRONMENT: The Director of Academic Computin=
g
is one of three directors reporting to the Assistant Vice President for
Computing and Information Resources (CIR) at West Virginia University. The
other two directors are responsible for telecommunications and network serv=
ices
and administrative computing. The office of Academic Computing is a servic=
e-
based unit of WVU Computing and Information Resources and provides support
for academic and research computing activities throughout WVU, including
consulting, training, research support, strategic planning, locating fundin=
g
sources for academic and research programs, serving as an information resou=
rce
for applying computing technologies to instruction and research; and
administration of the public computer lab sites. The unit consists of 21
subordinate managers, computer professionals and adminstrative personnel, w=
ith
an operating budget of over $700,000. Computing facilities include a wide
variety of computer resources under the control of various units (including
consulting and training). Three student labs, an instructional technology
resource center, and a central facility for distribution of video, data and
voice instructional materials to multiple classrooms are under the Director=
of
Academic Computing. Major mainframe computing is provided by the West Virgi=
nia
Network for Educational Telecomputing, an independent, off-campus, state
support ed facility.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The specific responsibilities of the Director of Academic
Computing include, but are not limited to the following:

* Provide and coordinate computing support and initiatives for
instructional programs and research computing activities, including
hardware, software, and support services (consulting and training) f=
or
faculty and students.

* Serve as an advocate for and provide leadership in the use of comput=
ers
and multimedia technology in the educational process.

* Develop and implement short- and long-range plans for academic
computing. Participate in strategic planning for CIR; manage academ=
ic
computing budget and academic computing staff and services.

* Provide liaison between the academic and administrative computing
functions.

* Recommend policy for academic computing programs.

* Establish and maintain professional relationships with peer institut=
ions
and appropriate technical and professional associations.

QUALIFICATIONS: The position requires a person with a proven record of
accomplishment and extensive experience in academic computing, both large-s=
cale
and micro-computing, and in telecommunications networking in a multifaceted
environment. Other qualifications include:

* Advanced degree: Doctorate preferred but applicants with a Masters
degree in an appropriate field will be considered. Senior-level
administrative or management experience desirable.

* Five years experience in the field of academic computing in
progressively more responsible positions, with at least two years of
administrative/management experience.

* Thorough understanding and knowledge of the role of computing in
teaching and research.

* Thorough understanding of university budget procedures, including
external grant funding regulations.

* Demonstrated knowledge of computing, telecommunications, multimedia,=
and
information system capabilities and techniques which support
instructional and research computing.

* Demonstrated skill in communication and leadership with a broad rang=
e of
constituencies.

* Ability to interact with the deans, faculty, and students of the six=
teen
colleges in the development of innovative computing for teaching and
research.

SALARY: Competitive

STARTING DATE: January 1, 1996 or as soon as possible after the conclusion=
of
the selection process.
