Stand Magazine, one of the world's better known small literary
magazines (now at volume 35) is sponsoring its first Poetry
Competition (it's short story competition is well known). The press
release below may be of interest to Humanist readers:

STAND MAGAZINE: 1st Poetry Competition.

Stand Magazine, which specializes in new poetry, short fiction and
reviews launches its first poetry competition on the 1st January, 1996.
In the past, Stand's prestigious short story competition has drawn
entrants from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel, as
well as the UK and Ireland.

There is a total of #2,500 in prize money. All the runners-up will
receive prizes of books selected by HarperCollins from their
distinguished Flamengo imprint.

This new poetry Competition is judged by two practising poets. They are
Denise Riley, and the poet and social observer Ken Smith.

There will be a 1st prize of #1,500; a second of #500; a third of #250;
a fourth of #150; a fifth of #100. There will also be 20 runners-up
prizes of books donated by HarperCollins and one-year subscriptions to
Stand Magazine. Stand will publish both the first five winners and the
first five runners-up.

Original poems in English, of up to five hundred lines, may be submitted
by anyone, anywhere, with a donation of #3.50 to Stand Magazine, which
is a registered charity. Payment must be made in either sterling or US
dollars (US $7.00) Two copies of each entry must be submitted.

Entries are being accepted from January 1 until June 30, 1996. The
prize-giving will take place in a venue in the North of England.
