Subject: Levi-Strauss and Durkheim quotations
I am editing the papers of the late Karl Leyser for publication and find in
one of them the following: ritual can be a language in a literal sense to
convey <quote> a conceptual apparatus for intellectual operations at an
abstract and metaphysical level </quote>. The passage quoted is attributed
to Levi-Strauss, but with no reference given. In another passage, it is
said that: Durkheim, Radcliffe-Brown and Marcel Mauss assumed that every
action belonged to one of two kinds: <quote> mystical, non-utilitarian and
sacred, or rational, common-sense, utilitarian and profane. </quote> This
doesn't seem to be Radcliffe-Brown or Mauss, so it must be Durkheim.
I'm sure neither of these quotations should be too hard to track down;
trouble is, the library here in Munich for obvious reasons doesn't have the
English translations of Levi-Strauss and Durkheim. If anyone can identify
either of these quotations easily with title and page reference and drop me
a line to tell me, I'd be most grateful, and would of course duly
acknowledge.
