I threw this out there to my gang as some were heading out the door for 
the weekend.  We decided that a row spanning no columns or a cell 
spanning no rows is a Zen koan akin to the sound of one hand clapping.

While we're at it, what about <row rows="0"> and <cell cols="0">?
