Coming out of the xpointer work, I decided to see exactly how hard it
would be to implement string-range().

You can see the results at https://github.com/stuartyeates/xpointer To
quote from the README "My plan is to give it up as too hard if I don't
have the most complete xpointer suite within ~ two months."

Along the way I'm actually finding a lots more xpointer
implementations than I'd expected, and accumulating links to some of
them in the README.
