I can see a case that this inconsistency is not the end of the world,
but I'm having trouble imagining an argument that it's actually a good
thing? (Unless the point were to argue that we shouldn't be the ones to
try to impose such consistency and so this mess makes that point, which
doesn't convince me.)
I should have thought that we should normalize to "italic" in all cases
(following CSS, if you need a reason other than euphony), *and*
encourage people to. But I'm sure I'm about to hear a coutner-argument...
