If I read these two aright, the intention is to replace the reference to 
stringVal in the content model of macroSpec with a reference to valList, 
rather than just to add the latter.

If so, I agree -- but only  provided that Sebastian declares on his 
grandmother's bones that nothing in the current ODD processing suite 
does anything at all with <stringVal>s
