Sebastian's note here shouldn't be overlooked as a mere detail of 
course....

What we are doing is switching from one type of non-apparent 
magic to another type of conditional magic.

If you are before 1.9.0 then you get the Old Magic. If you are 
newer then you don't believe in magic.

That decision in itself is... of course... a kind of magic.
