I've done some very imprecise and unscientific searching with various 
search engines. 'standoff' seems to be used more in north american 
publications where 'stand-off' seems preferred elsewhere. (Also it 
seemed to me that 'standoff' was used earlier.)

As a place, it is of course 'Stand Off'... as demonstrated by this photo 
that I took on my way back from the 2006 TEIMM:
