"Stand-off", any day ("Standoff" sounds like a cheap brand of vodka).

As a change from some recent tricky questions on the list, here is a
nice simple one.

A User (P. Banski to be exact) writes "The Guidelines contain three
orthographic variants of "stand-off" ("stand-off", "stand off", and
"standoff"), sometimes within a single chapter (e.g. ch. 18). "

Please could we have a show of hands as to which spelling should be
adopted? This is also an opportunity for you to show that you are alive
and reading the list!

The spelling for which I receive most votes by Monday morning 1100 GMT
will be uniformly imposed at that time.
