The "E" is just shorthand for "times 10 to the power of".

I can read them, too - well, I wrote them after all :-) - but they
aren't 100% satisfactory.
In my usual email reader (Evolution), the 1, 2, and 3 glyphs are
distinctly larger and bolder than the others. Reading the email in
Microsoft Web Outlook using Firefox, the 1, 2, and 3 appear much
smaller. I don't know what fonts are being used, and perhaps I could
tweak the software to do a better job, but at the moment it's pretty
ugly!
