I wonder how to gracefully extend the scheme
to allow for  non-rectangular shapes. the name
@box is a bit restrictive. I'd prefer @shape,
possibly.

I am fairly sure I believe in the internal integrity of this
setup; and, more or less, in its implementability.
I'd hesitate to sign off on it until I had tried it
with real data, though, and made some
output....
