The practice of pointing @rend to <rendition> is not just for born
digital material. I think CSS (or XSL-FO) properties such as
font-family, font-size, font-weight, text-indent, etc. can be used to
describe accurately and precisely the appearance of a source document,
at least for printed source documents, though many properties can also
be useful in the description of manuscript documents.
