Interesting question. Suppose my extension consists of adding some 
non-namespaced elements which just happen to have the same names as some 
existing TEI-namespaced elements. A namespace aware processor wont be 
confused but it sure as hell confuses me.

Actually thinking about this further, is there any difference between 
this case and the case where I do have a namespace for my TEI-homonyms?

And, if <foo:p> is not the same as <tei:p> is not the same as <p>, maybe 
we can say that by default extensions are not in any namespace? This 
seems such an obvious escape hatch I must have missed something.
