OK, I've fixed
  columns= of <layout>
  cols= of <cell>
  cols= of <table>
  date= of <birth>
as James pointed out, and also
  dateCreated= of <teiHeader>
  dateUpdated= of <teiHeader>
  value= of <docDate>
  from= of <dateRange>
  notAfter= of 'tei.datable'
  notBefore= of 'tei.datable'
all of which really looked like a cut-and-paste error, and
  max= of <numeric>
  value= of <num>
  value= of <numeric>
  xml:id= of 'tei.global'
  xml:lang= of 'tei.global'
which I can't tell why they were screwed up.
