Just to this one point, I nest <lg>s all the time, for 
example where a stanza consists of two half-stanzas, as in 
skaldic poetry, or in carols and similar poetry where there 
is a burden or refrain, which is part of, but separate 
from, the verse to which it is attached. I never, on the 
other hand, use numbered <lg>s, or numbered <div>s for that 
matter (having been told not to by a certain LB).
