I am inclining to the same view, especially since
we changed the root element from <TEI.2> to <TEI>

I think the way forward is for those of us who
can face it to start experimenting with a namespaced TEI,
and see how it goes. I suggest "http://www.tei-c.org/P5"
as the namespace identifier.
