serpent and eagle

Throughout Zarathustra, he mentions his animal friends the serpent
and eagle. What is the signifigance of these terms? Eagle as opposed to
gravity and serpent the reminder of the eternal recurrence.

I keep thinking about a passage in the Illiad where the dannans ask
Zeus for a sign if he is going to be on their side, and an eagle flies out
of the sky in the middle of the battle with a serpent in its mouth, as a
victory sign...something like that more or less, I don't remember the exact
place in the book where it is
