(Section 2)
WHO IS JAMIL AL-AMIN AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
A "60-SECOND" BRIEF
Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown is a past
chairman of the Student non-Violent Coordinating Committee, SNCC, the
radical student "shock troops" of the Civil Rights Movement of the
1960's.
Jamil is a unbowed, articulate-unapologetic, proud Black man-who has
always spoken what was on his mind and spoken the truth about what he
sees in American society: its racism and injustice to Black people.
As H. Rap Brown, he served five years on unrelated charges in the
early 1970's.
During his time in prison, Brown learned of Islam and embraced the
religion. And, with that he developed new and clear direction to his
life.
He moved into a crime-ridden area in Atlanta, GA and successfully
organized community residents to fight drugs and other "negative
controls" inflicted on that community.
He has owned and operated a small grocery store in this community for
many years.
As a spiritual leader, an Imam, he developed a strong Muslim community
in the area and served it for 25 years.
Since his release from prison in 1975, there have been 35 attempts
made to re-arrest and re-incarcerate the Imam on various charges-every
charge had been dropped-each charge found to be baseless and often
have involved police coercion.
Since his activities in SNCC and immediately thereafter, Jamil has
been a wanted man, hunted and hounded by federal agents looking for
opportunities to return him to jail, to lay claim to his life.
AND NOW HE IS FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE!
(Below is a super-brief account of what is going on.)
Imam Al-Amin has been in jail since March 20, 2000, after being picked
up and held for allegedly shooting two police officers in Atlanta,
Georgia.
Jury selection began Monday, January 7th and the trial will probably
begin the 1st of February 2002.
This is a difficult case and the Imam faces 13 counts under Georgia
law. Other counts can come under Alabama and federal law.
There has been widespread tampering with the evidence of the case
including a total mismatch of eye-witness identification, blood
disappearance and the vanished cars. Where have you heard this
before? Does this sound like it could be another cover up?
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL has entered a letter of concern on behalf of
Imam Al-Amin. You can help!
We believe Jamil Al-Amin is innocent of the charges and that he should
have a full opportunity to defend himself in court. Here's how you
