Jury selection began Monday in the murder trial of a former Ku Klux
Klansman accused of killing four black girls in the 1963 bombing of a
Birmingham, Alabama, church. Thomas Blanton Jr., charged with multiple
counts of murder in connection with one of the most deadly and notorious
hate crimes of America's civil rights era, sat quietly with his lawyer
as dozens of prospective jurors gathered to receive questionnaires in a
downtown Birmingham court. The 62-year-old white supremacist is one of
four men believed responsible for planting the dynamite that exploded
under a stairwell of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church on Sept. 15,
1963.
