The Remarque obituary is very pertinent to this list's discussion
of war guilt and soldiers. The writer of the Times' obit, Alden
Whitman, is himself of interest. He was a Communist Party member
from 1935 to 1948, was hauled before the Senate Internal Security
Committee, was indicted for contempt for refusing to name others
while admitting his own membership, won before the U.S. Supreme
Court, was reindicted by Attorney General Bobby Kennedy, but won
in District court. So he was under constant threat of
    imprisonment for eleven years.
