In regard to African American fiction:
Horace Coleman, In the Grass, 1995, Vietnam Generation/Burning
Cities Press, ISBN 1-885215-14-2.
Many accessible poems of interest that run from Afro-Asian kids in
Vietnam to the legacy of Shaka Zulu.
Doesn't hurt that he is a mighty fine person with universal
compassion.

Look at Geroge Davis, _Coming Home_ . I am afraid it is out of print but
there are a few copies around at Powells bookstore. The novel was made
into a film by Jane Fonda, but her film has little relation to the novel
(which is pretty good). George is at Rutgers - Newark.
