You might search through the papers of state and local
politicians. I've done this for my own work and have found a lot of
letters from wives, mothers, and girlfriends concerned about the war,
their male loved ones, etc. The archives were these collections are
stored should have a contents list of the files, which will make your
search easier. There may be some restrictions on how you can use these
papers.
