On media and Vietnam, I'd concur with Herman & Chomsky, chapter 4, in
Manufacturing Consent, and would add Dan Hallin's book on the Invisible War,
and Melvin Small's Covering Dissent. Chomsky, of course, has written volumes
on the subject of intellectuals and public opinion about the war, implying a
media role.

Don't forget books by Todd Gitlin (Whole World is Watching) and Melvin
Small (can't recall title). Hope this isn't a re-post.
