I had a student deferment in 1969, 2S, but was drafted anyway in June. So,
I know at least they were not iron clad. I was told that they needed warm
bodies after the Tet offensive, high body count.

Hope that helps.

I don't know when they ended. I know that Eric Chester first raised the
issue of opposing them within SDS* in December 1965. At the time, most
people thought he was crazy to "alienate" people by calling for an end to
class privilege. By the following Summer, SDS was almost unanimously in
favor of abolishing them. The Communist Party-influenced (to put it mildly)
W.E.B. DuBois Clubs continued to support the 2-S deferment on the ground
that anybody should get out of the draft who could. In the fall of 1966,
they simply disappeared.

(* That is, that's the first time the issue was raised in SDS. I don't know
where else it might have been raised earlier.)

The Selective Service System in January of 1966 abolished the policy
of granting automatic draft deferments to college students. The
change in policy was designed to balance the military burden which had
fallen mainly on the poor and the black. Students saw this change as
an attack and backlash against campus antiwar demonstrations. As a
result demonstrations focussed on draft resistance as well as the war.
Hope that answers your question.

I believe grad student deferments ended in 1968, and undergrad in 1973.
