The answer to your first question is:
Milan Kundera wrote in *The Book of Laughter and Forgetting*
"It is 1971, and Mirek says: The struggle of man against power is the
struggle of memory against forgetting." This from page 4 of "The
Definitive New Translation" from the French by Aaron Asher. Kundera,
a Czech writer, has been living in France now for more than 20 years.
Why the definitive new translation is from the French instead of the
Czech is a somewhat complicated story, which I won't bore people with
here.
No help, I'm afraid on the second question.
