In all the back and forth re Vietnam, I have yet to see anyone mention an
excellent book that places Vietnam solidly within the framework of U.S.
foreign/military policy from the 1940s onward.

Instruments of Statecraft: U.S. Guerrilla Warfare, Counterinsurgency and
Counterterrorism, 1940-1990, by Michael McClintock. 1992. Pantheon. 604
pages. HB. out of print (soon after release, the publisher essentially
pulled it from circulation). See if your local library has it.

A solid piece of research, with many original (archival) sources.

copies for sale.)
