I forgot to mention in my last post that Marc Leepson of the _The
Veteran_ has a great write up on the anti-McNamara conference Peter
Rollins helped create in D.C.

Lindsay,

This is a fascinating research topic. It also has been covered to a
certain degree by some baby boomers, but has had limited research on
it from a "generation X" perspective. I'm interested in what you
conclude and why.

Here are some valuable sources for your research.

Melvin Small, a professor who studies American foreign policy, recent
American history and peace studies at Wayne State University, wrote a
book titled COVERING DISSENT: THE MEDIA AND THE ANTI-VIETNAM WAR
MOVEMENT. It provides a study of how "the media" presented the anti-
war movement to the general public.

Also, an organization called ACCURACY IN THE MEDIA made a video after
PBS showed the series VIETNAM: A TELEVISION HISTORY. Their video was
titled TELEVISION'S VIETNAM, A VIDEO BY ACCURACY IN THE MEDIA.
Both of these sources provide some analysis of the media during the
Vietnam War and they have differing views about how it was presented
to the "American" public. You may want to watch some of these.

Furthermore, a book written by James Banerian called LOSERS ARE
PIRATES provides some analysis of the press coverage during the
Vietnam War.

In addition, you will probably want to look at Todd Gitlin's, THE
WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING: MASS MEDIA IN THE MAKING OF THE NEW LEFT.

Also, there was a conference at Notre Dame University in December of
1993 where a paper was presented on the press and the Vietnam War. I
kept the paper, but I am unable, at this moment to find it. When,
and if I do, I will provide you with the title and the author to see
if it is possible for you to access it. I think I've seen the
authors name on the list of members of this group so maybe he can
help.

The best source is a survey of the newspapers themselves.

Good chance!
