One of the differences between then now, is that in the 1960s, many people
actually knew how to sew. Our mothers had been doing it for years, and the
average family had a sewing machine. Sewing your own clothes was a way to be
fashionable, and to get clothes that fit. Remember girls had to take home
ec, and in the early 60s it became "in" for boys to do the same. How many of
recent generations have ever used a sewing machine, or tried to do much
beyond sewing on buttons.? On the one hand it was acceptable, and not viewed
as too geeky, and on the other it was a creative outlet.
