It strikes me that this is exactly the sort of thing the Herbert Marcuse
was pointing out when he talked about the absorbtive capacity of modern
commercial culture. One of his examples was the marketing of the peace
symbol from the anti-nuke movement as gold, silver and plastic jewelery
of all kinds.
