Jo: Herbert Agar, The Price of Power, is excellent on the impact of
anti-communism, but with a focus on the fifties. My guess is that this
effect could be seen as stretching to the sixties. A U.C. Berkeley
Sociology dissertation by Bob Michels was on HUAC and its impact. This
might be worth pursuing. Jim Wood

Though there are *many* really good books on this topic, you might look at
a couple of older ones---
Michael Parenti, THE ANTI-COMMUNIST IMPULSE (Random House, 1969)
Marty Jezer, THE DARK AGES: LIFE IN THE UNITED STATES, 1945-1960
(South End Press, 1982)
Hope these are helpful.
